National Orphan Train MuseumFrom 1854 to 1929 over 250,000 orphaned or abandoned children from New York were taken on trains to new homes all over the US. The National Orphan Train Museum is dedicated to preserving the records of the Orphan Train movement. The museum is housed in a restored UP Depot while the Morgan-Dowell Research Center houses the ever growing archives. Nominated as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas-History, a visit will amaze and touch your heart like no other museum. Whole Wall MuralThe longest sculpted brick mural in the US, located on the east wall of the Cloud County Museum Annex at the corner of US 81 & 6th St., downtown Concordia, is a must see! 785-243-4303
Nazareth ConventHeadquarters for the Sisters of St. Joseph, was erected in 1903 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Ask about a tour of this incredible building. Monday-Friday 2-4 p.m. Donations accepted. 785-243-2113
WWII German POW Camp ConcordiaDuring WWII, POW Camp Concordia housed over 4,000 German prisioners. Located two miles north and one mile east of Concordia, the guard tower, guard post building, water tower base and building T-9 still stand on the original site. Two rooms of memorabilia and historical artifacts from Camp Concordia are housed at the Cloud County Museum. Brown Grand TheatreUpon completion in 1907, the Belleville Telescope described the Brown Grand as “the largest, most modern and in every respect the finest theatre in the state”. Restored to its original splendor, this 650 seat theatre is a must see! Cloud County MuseumJourney back in time at the Cloud County Museum located at 625 Broadway, Concordia.Housed in the former 1908 Carnegie library building, this large museum features Charles Blosser's 1928 Lincoln Page bi-plane hanging from the ceiling, a working water pump, bells that beg to be rung, the old county jail cell, two rooms of P.O.W. Meridian Way Wind FarmLocated eight miles south of Concordia, Meridian Way Wind Farm consists of 67 Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines, the largest on-shore wind turbine currently being installed in the United States. |
