Clyde Watermelon Festival 2018

The first Watermelon Carnival in the state of Kansas, and possibly the world, was held in Clyde, Kansas in 1899. The Watermelon Festival began when watermelons were a choice crop on sandy, river bottom land and could be easily shipped out by rail. This Labor Day weekend marks the 119th Annual Clyde Watermelon Festival, now sponsored by the Clyde Chamber of Commerce. Traditions continue like the Saturday morning parade and free watermelon feed on Main Street, just like the first festival.

Hundreds of people gather every Labor Day weekend for the 4-day celebration. Visitors look forward to the parade, barbeques, demolition derby, dances, contests, games, and socializing.

The weekend will start off on Friday, August 31st with the Chuck Wagon Supper & Show at 5:30 p.m. at the Park, sponsored by Cloud County Health Center. The rest of the evening includes a golf cart scavenger hunt, high school football game, and corn hole tournament.

Saturday events begin at 7 a.m. with a scrumptious biscuit and gravy breakfast, sponsored by Brantford Covenant Church Youth. The money raised will go towards the areas youth group and camp fund. Next up, the Largest Watermelon Contest will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Ideal Market. The rest of the day will be busy with a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, art displays, craft exhibitors, live music, watermelon carving contest, tractor display, an obstacle course and more. The staple events include the parade, barbeque lunch, and demolition derby. A Hoverboard Obstacle Course will be a new addition this year.

The fun doesn’t end there. Sunday and Monday continue with a co-ed softball tournament, fried chicken dinner, horseshoe tournament, bouncy houses, ice cream social, road rally, quarter carnival, and fireworks display.

With events for all ages, this fun-filled weekend is well worth the visit. View the schedule of events.
