They serve as enduring symbols of the past\, offering valuable insights into the lives and legacies of those who came before us. By preserving and honoring these sites\, communities not only pay tribute to their ancestors but also enrich their own cultural heritage\, ensuring that the stories of yesteryear continue to inspire and educate future generations.On June 15\, the Cloud County Historical Society Museum and Cloud County Genealogical Society is cohosting an immersive program and tour focusing on the historic cemeteries\, churches\, post offices\, and ghost towns of Meredith (81 Highway on east)\, Oakland\, and Starr Townships. Meredith Township’s information will include St. Peter’s Church/cemetery\, town of Meredith; Oakland Township’s McAllister Union Cemetery\, Heber Church and community\, Malta\, Phelp’s Cemetery and Thomas’ Cemetery; Starr Township’s Zahnville\, Starr Center/cemetery (2 stones)\, Green Cove\, Miltonvale Cemetery. The event will include guided tours of the region’s country cemeteries\, highlighting the graves of Civil War veterans and other notable figures\, accompanied by in-depth discussions about the enduring influence these sites have on the local heritage. Through these tours and discussions\, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how these elements have shaped the cultural and historical landscape of the townships\, preserving the stories and spirit of the past for future generations.For those living in the Concordia region\, busing is provide for the ride over to the program at the Miltonvale Senior Center. The bus will leave from the Cloud County Historical Society Museum at 1:30 in the afternoon. Everyone will gather at the Miltonvale Senior Center at 2:00 p.m. for the program and eat a piece of pie served with vanilla ice cream. After the presentation at the senior center\, attendees if interested can follow the bus around to the cemeteries and tour guides will point out where abandoned communities were located. Due to limited space\, please call 785-243-2866 to purchase tickets and confirm a seat on the bus. Let us know what you favorite pie choice is whether it is apple\, cherry\, peach or blueberry crumb. Tickets are $25 for a bus seat\, program/tour\, pie and ice cream or $20 for the pie\, ice cream and program. Fund raised will go to cover the expense of bus rental\, senior center rental and dessert. The fund left over will help both the genealogical society and museum with future program expenses.\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Art Exhibit WenDee Rowe: From the Seat of a Bike
DESCRIPTION:WenDee Rowe grew up bicycling along K-96 in Greeley County near the town of Tribune. During the summers she would bike the 2 ½ miles from the family farm\, do lawn mowing jobs in the morning\, swim in the afternoon and make a quick stop to dive into the candy drawer at Grammy Connie’s house before heading home in the evening. \n  \nThose early days of biking carried with her when she moved to southern California in the 1970s and later to northern California where she used her tax refund to buy a John Deere-made bicycle! \n  \nAfter returning to Kansas and moving to Garden City\, she often biked to various jobs that included Lee Richardson Zoo\, the Finney County Museum\, and the Finney County Convention and Visitors Bureau. \n  \nShe was hired by the Kansas Sampler Foundation\, located in rural Inman (McPherson County) in 2006. Since then\, WenDee has been the project manager and in charge of communications and promotion of the annual Kansas Sampler Festival and now\, the Big Kansas Road Trip. \n  \nShe is also the co-author of Kansas Guidebook 2 for Explorers and accompanied Marci Penner to every incorporated city in Kansas for research. \n  \nWhile living in rural Inman\, she has discovered a love for gravel biking and taking pictures along the scenic back roads near her home. \n  \nThis is her first photography exhibit and all of them were taken from the seat of her bike. \n  \nYou can follow WenDee on Facebook and Instagram. \n

For three days in June\, Orphan Train Rider descendants\, genealogists\, and history enthusiasts gather in the town of Concordia\, Kansas to celebrate and remember the children who rode the orphan trains. Presentations from the National Orphan Train Complex staff\, special guest author Andrea Warren\, and keynote speaker New York Children’s Aid Society archivist Paul Clarke are highlights of the event. Plus\, new Orphan Train Rider statue plaques and window coverings will be revealed\, the DAR will make a presentation\, descendants of Orphan Train Riders will share stories\, and a special movie will be shown at the movie theatre Friday night. She still has a mean hook shot\, just ask the referee from the college alumni game! Billie J and her longtime husband have been married too many years to count. They live on a ranch in the Sandhills\, and she says her comedy isn’t raunchy\, it’s ranchy! Living in an area where comedy is scarce has forced her to use unconventional ways to perform shows. She has traveled to many states in the Midwest\, raising the world’s vibration with laughter. She stalks many comedians like Tim the Dairy Farmer\, for advice and mentorship. Also\, getting to perform with well-known people like the famous actor/comedian Tatanka Means at Rosebud Casino. If you talk their leg off\, they will put you on a stage! Having a podcast interview with the enjoyable Nick Hoff turned into a show opener. She calls herself\, “Halftime With Billie J\,” because she is sharking over half a century of real-life stories. Her podcast\, “Not the Trophy Wife\,” is inspired by her husband. Ranch life is far from glamorous as her comedy portrays. Billie J has performed in bars\, breweries\, county fairs\, corporate events\, theatre shows\, post prom\, birthday parties\, and even wedding receptions.
