DESCRIPTION:On October 20\, Julia Park Tracey returns to the place that helped her discover her great great grandfather’s heritage to discuss her novel and how she came to write it. She’ll also provide insight into the times that helped her shape the novel. In 1859\, women have few rights\, even to their own children. When her husband dies and her children become wards of a predator\, Martha—bereaved and scared—flees their beloved country home taking the children with her to the squalor of New York City. But as a naive woman alone\, preyed on by male employers\, she soon finds herself nearly destitute. The Home for the Friendless offers free food\, clothing\, and schooling to New York’s street kids and Martha secures a place temporarily for her children there. When she returns for them\, she discovers that the Society has indentured her two eldest out to work via the Orphan Train\, and has placed her two youngest for adoption. The Society refusing to help and with the Civil War erupting around her\, Martha sets out to reclaim each of them.

DESCRIPTION:The Concordia Fall Fest Committee has announced a theme for the 2023 Fall Fest Parade. \nThis year’s theme will be “Fall in Love with Concordia.” \nThe parade will begin at 10 am on Saturday\, September 23rd.  There is a $5 entry fee for the parade.  A “Fall in Love with Concordia” parade contest will be held for qualifying contestants.  There will be three winners.  First place will receive $75 in Chamber Bucks.  Second place will receive $50 in Chamber Bucks.  Third place will receive $25 in Chamber Bucks. \nParade entries will be judged prior to the parade and announced during the parade. \nConcordia Chamber of Commerce Director Annie Bergmann says they have parade float registration forms available online at concordiakansaschamber.com/fall-fest.
